Tips for the Perfect Tail

Color

The best way to choose a color is to stand back and view the tail as a whole. When you look at the color up close you will see hairs of many different colors and it can be easy to get hung up on the many individual colors when we should be matching the overall color. Since the tail will be hung in the lower half of the tail, that is the color we want to match.

If the horse has a unique tail, we will send hair swatches to ensure the perfect match. Visit the Tail Color page to see our standard colors and keep in mind we will can make a custom blend of those color to get a match!

Length

Pick out the spot on the dock of the tail where you would braid in the extension, then measure from there to just under the fetlock joint. We offer tails in 4” increments. Order the tail longer than you need and then trim it as you need. If you are confident in your measurement I can cut it to the length for you or you can cut it yourself after the tail is put in.

Weight - Thickness

Weight and thickness are used interchangeably. We offer three weights for our standard tails - regular, thick, and extra thick . Keep in mind that as the tails get longer it takes more hair to achieve the same thickness. While I only keep those weights in stock, I am able to make tails in any thickness you desire.

Cut

All tails can be trimmed to be either blunt cut or taper cut. The taper cut offers a more natural look while the blunt cut offers a crisp clean look. The cut you choose will likely be determined by the discipline you ride.
